Oh dear, mobile phone trouble this week for Jos Biggs David and Rosemary had volunteered to take me to Arboleas to board the coach for a much anticipated trip arranged by the Almanzora Group of Friends. Apart from a spirit of friendliness on their part and convenience on mine their offer of taking one car not two made sense on the Save the Planet front. However, I prevaricated - I might not feel sufficiently recovered from my ‘breakthrough infection’ to go. ‘I’ll see how I feel on Thursday and let you know.’ The mobile must have heard me. ‘We’ll soon put a stop to that.’ It said. Sure enough when I rang David and Rosemary it announced firmly that ‘this number does not correspond to any client.’ At the fourth attempt I decided to go at the problem from another angle - I messaged. The phone was ready for me. ‘Can’t send your message.’ In all it ‘couldn’t send my message’ four times. It added maliciously ‘And you can’t email, you don’t have the address.’ I stood centre of the living room, perplexed. Then the phone rang. I pounced on it with glee; That’s David, checking if I’m coming or not. ‘Hello,’ I said enthusiastically. ‘I’m so pleased to speak to you. I’m feeling fine, and I’m looking forward to going out. I’ll put on my best bib and tucker. What time are you going to pick me up?’ ‘Er.’ I hadn’t expected hesitation. ‘Did you get my message?’ Maybe the phone had relented and sent my message after all. ‘Er.’ What? Another er? I whisked through the possibilities, which included that I’d got the wrong day, so I enquired hopefully ‘We are still OK for going out tomorrow evening?’ A very short pause. ‘I think we may have our wires crossed. This is Andy from Albox on-line. Who do you think you are speaking to?’ Oh. ‘Sorry, I thought you were someone else.’ Pretty obvious, but the best answer I could come up with!
