Imagine two tubes of toothpaste standing next to each other on the washstand. One tube is nearly new, squeezed tidily from the bottom, the other is squished up from the middle and nearly empty.

What happened next?

The Final Squeeze - A Love Story

‘Oh no! Sweetheart, what happened to you? Look at the state of you - you’re all squeezed out of shape; even your cap’s on squiffy!’

‘Don’t ask! It was awful!’

‘But what happened? Will you be alright?’

‘I don’t know. It was the worst experience of my life, I don’t think I’ll ever recover.’

‘But what happened? Tell me, tell me please.’

‘It was the kids. They had a sleepover. I was grabbed and stuffed into a sponge bag, so I’ve no idea where we went. I asked the flannel and the toothbrush, but they didn’t know either.

Anyway, when we got there I was taken out of the bag and put on the washstand next to two Colgates and a Tesco’s Own Brand.’

‘Then what?’

‘Well, the Colgates were so stuck up, just because they are more expensive. They wouldn’t even say hello. The Tesco’s was OK, a lot more friendly.’

‘And?’

‘Then the kids came in all giggley and grabbed all of us. And that is when it started to happen.’

‘What? What happened? Tell me!’

‘They had a toothpaste fight. The Colgates were on one side, and Tesco and I were on the other.’

‘No!’

‘Yes! The Colgates weren’t much good, they’re too thick and sticky. But Tesco - he was brilliant! He’s a lot more runny, and he squirted all over the Colgates - they were not happy! Mind you, I did my bit as well. We absolutely splatted those Colgates.’

‘So who won?’

‘Tesco and I. Mind you, the poor chap was totally squeezed out, and you can see what happened to me.’

‘My hero!’

‘No, Tesco was the hero. He battled to the death - He gave his life for the team.’

‘How brave. But you’re brave too, darling.’

‘Maybe, but at what price? We both know that the love between two tubes of toothpaste can only last as long as the toothpaste inside us. And I’m nearly squeezed out, I haven’t got much longer - maybe a couple of brushings, no more.’

‘My love, don’t say that!’

‘It’s true. Soon I’ll be thrown away, and you will have a brand new love, sitting in my place all neat and fat all the way from cap to base.’

‘No, I will stay true to you until my last squeeze. I’ll never forsake you, I will love you for as long as I live.’

‘My darling, that’s how it is. But I will love you right up until I’m thrown in the bin. I wish we were toothbrushes, we would have much longer together.’

‘Yes. If we were toothbrushes I could be a pink toothbrush, and you could be a blue toothbrush.’
