Oh dear, oh dear. Jos Biggs cat Si was not happy after this !! Read on....... Si the cat is everything that is cat-like with added dignity. Had she been alive in the later years of the nineteenth century she could have given lessons in Haughty to Queen Victoria. She comes and goes as and when she pleases, allowing me the supreme honour of being allowed to open whichever door she currently favours. Sometimes it takes a time for me to get the message - she will sit in a very pointed manner in front of the door, exuding an air of displeasure at being kept waiting. When I do come to my senses and open the door she will sashay through in her own time with never the slightest hint of gratitude. I have pointed out to her that there is a very expensive cat-flap in the door, and the inevitable response is ‘So?’ as she stalks on through. As she disappears she will add ‘Catflaps are for common cats. I am not a common cat.’ Generally speaking she is very law-abiding, unlike her son, Mr Thomas Fluffipants, who insists that rules don’t apply to him, as he is fluffy. There is no conflict between her and myself, as she considers that I am simply implementing her desire for law and order. She is a very bright cat, and quite capable of anticipating a disruptive force in the Karma of the smooth running of the house, thus without any loss of dignity, she will circumnavigate whichever potential point of conflict is likely to arise between us. However, her weakness is small enclosed spaces. If I leave a cupboard door open she will be in there, checking out the contents of the cupboard and the level of comfort it will provide her if she would care to take a catnap in it. A couple of weeks ago Lorraine and David invited me to go with them to Águilas, leaving on Thursday morning and returning on Friday afternoon. I went into the spare room to fetch my bag, a task that took maybe a couple of minutes. I assembled and packed the necessities for an overnight stay, checked that all the doors and windows were as they should be, and made sure that there was ample food and water correctly placed for each cat - she has her own dining area in the bedroom, away from her irritating son. We had a lovely time in Águilas, and returned at a leisurely pace, arriving back in Albox mid-afternoon. Thus I was home at around teatime. I switched the kettle on, got the doings for tea ready, and while waiting for the kettle to reach the temperature necessary for a good cup of tea I began to unpack. Tea drunk, unpacking unpacked, I went to return the bag to the spare bedroom. As I opened the door a turbo charged missile of black fur shot out and disappeared into the distance. Cautiously I opened the door fully, sniffing with dread as I did so. I can not begin to describe my relief at the lack of smell that greeted me! That cat had been in that room without food or more importantly water and her toilet for around 30 hours. We haven’t mentioned the incident, but next time I will know to check under the spare bed and anywhere else inaccessible!
