N332. Using 112 for Emergencies.

The use of the emergency number 112 in SPAIN

In Spain, as in the rest of the European Union, the emergency services (Police, health services, firefighters, etc..) can be accessed via the single emergency number 112.

Using the number 112 has some advantages:

- It covers all kinds of emergencies (health, accidents, situations of risk, etc.).

- It works in the whole of Spain.

- Calls are free, from both landlines and mobiles.

- Calls can be made from mobile phones even when they are blocked when the SIM card is inactive, or there is no coverage from the mobile phone provider.

IMPORTANT; There is no need for national area codes, even when calling from a foreign mobile !!!

Many British followers have asked us if after Brexit is possible in Spain to dial 112 from mobiles with UK sim cards or if they need to dial an international prefix.

So far there has not been any change. BUT, we invite you once again to share your experience. Have you had any problem dialing 112 from your phone with a British sim card?

(Spanish, English, German and French are the languages spoken by the teleoperators) BUT in some communities, there can be other languages available.

If you found useful this information, we invite you to share it. ?

Using UK Bank Cards in Spain

Please let your visiting family or friends see the following :-

USING YOUR UK CARDS ON HOLIDAY IN SPAIN

Just a quick reminder to all who will be visiting Spain this year and want to get the best conversion rate when using their UK bank account to pay or draw down money.

1.  When using an ATM, always reject the conversion rate.  This means that your bank will do the conversion which will be a much better rate.  It will not stop the transaction.

2.  When you buy things with your debit or credit card, always choose to buy in Euros as again, your bank will do the exchange rate.

3.  Never use an ATM that is a booth in a car park or on the pavement. You won't get the chance to reject their exchange rate and you will pay more in £s than you are withdrawing in €s!

4.  Always use the ATMs of a proper Spanish Bank not a cash ATM.  They are always in the wall of their own bank (with the exception of airports and shopping centres where you will find 2 or 3 from reputable banks).

Unlike the UK, their is no 'cash back' in supermarkets here and the banks don't put ATMs at supermarkets either (unless it is part of a large shopping mall) so you will need to find a proper bank and use their ATM.  It is better not to exchange £s for €s before you come unless you do it at your own bank and be very careful of using the Currency Exchanges at UK airports.  Spanish airports usually have proper bank ATMs that allow you to reject the conversion rate and you can use £s on the aircraft.

Having said that, have a great holiday if you are planning to visit us!
